Overview

TVPaint Animation allows you to create simple rigs so you can save some time when animating through Puppet Layers.

Rigging refers to the creation of a bone structure for a drawing. You will then be able to move the resulting puppet around, according to the pins / joints you will have placed on it. TVPaint will create inbetweens automatcally between your puppet's key poses. You will also be able to swap poses on the Timeline or create new ones.

Relying on those Puppet Layers may be especially useful when you want to animate a simple, recurring character. You can also use it to animate background elements (such as people passing by) faster while using hand-drawn techniques to focus on the key elements of a scene.

TVPaint's Puppet Tool will be automatically turned on as soon as you create a Puppet Layer. Two different modes will then be available when using this tool:

  • A Rigg Mode, allowing you to create a bone structure for a drawing.
  • An Animate Mode, allowing to animate your puppet.

We will cover those different modes in the following pages of this manual.

info
  • TVPaint's Puppet Layers will rely on the Library to work, so we recommend you to learn about it before trying to rig and animate a character.

  • TVPaint Puppet Layers are only available to TVPaint Professional users.

An example project will be used throughout this section of the user manual. You can download it here.
